My biggest discovery is just all of the resources that the State Library has to offer! I am very impressed with the wealth of material the State Library has available for librarians too.
I've been doing a lot of promoting of these resources. The counselor just had me show the juniors and seniors the Learning Express library site for their ACT. I also pointed out other features on that too besides the ACT. I also asked the secretary to put it in the announcements many times,too. I've shown all of the elementary teachers and students the different World Book sites for their level as well as SIRS Discoverer for the upper grades so far. I've sent a handout home with all of the students so they can use it from home. Since you came to our school, Joan, I feel that now many of the High School teachers will actually use it in their classrooms too so thank you! Thank you for this wonderful learning experience!

SD Library Challenge 9--Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Sanborn Maps
1. Ancestry Library--This is neat that you can search for yourself or another family member on Ancestry Library even though they aren't dead. I searched for my married name with my birthdate, lived in info, spouse and location. It returned 44,917 results. I couldn't find my name right off the bat anyway. I did see a Kristina Marie Novotny but she is from California and I saw another one from Las Vegas. I also saw my mother-in-law's name almost right away (and she passed away in 2010). I continued to search and finally saw my name but it didn't show my birthdate or parent's names.
2. Ancestry Library--I did a search on my favorite grandparent. I also listed where she lived which helped a lot. The very first result was hers' and there were 15,789 results. I love the fact that this gives the social security death index too. I couldn't remember when she died and I was reminded that her birthday was on the 11th. It shows how old she was when she died. The second result also showed her first, middle, maiden and married names. I'll have to show this to my son. He was really getting into geneology last fall.
3. Ancestry Library--I did a search for S.Dakota and narrowed it to photos and maps. I couldn't summarize by relevance or category and I chose category. I wanted to then search via U.S. School Yearbooks, but it didn't have Colome or Winner. I also chose the family photo collection but it only had 10 results.
4. Heritage Quest--In Heritage Quest, I chose Persi which has 2.3 million geneology and history articles. I clicked on People. I typed Wilder in for the surname. Typing Laura Ingalls Wilder with it didn't bring up any results. Wilder by itself brought up 273 results. I found an interesting article "Mary Gail Wilder Family Collection to Abraham Lincoln". If I find an article I like, I can click on the request form and complete it.
5. Sanborn Maps--I didn't list any town from here so I chose Pierre. Also, I wasn't familiar with any old buildings other than the capitol so that's what I looked for. Here's a picture of a map from 1941 of the State Capitol in Pierre.
